Water ducts

Mérida is located in a region characterized by Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers. Here water is the limiting factor for wildlife and human settlements.

Two thousand ago, people from Emerita Augusta collected water in reservoirs several kilometers apart of the city. They used stone pipes and long aqueducts to drive water to the city.

Proserpina was an important reservoir for Emerita Augusta. People built a duct 12 km long that crossed forests, pastures used for livestock and granitic quarries.

Nowadays we can see remains of the duct that are completely integrated in nature.
